CURRENT PLANS

Plans for Bankside Grove, Pope Park North  and Pope Park West are under development with the city architect and contracted park designers.   Click on the link for Bankside Grove December 2023 . The first design proposal from 2022 is at  New 2022 Design Proposals, The latest design for Pope Park West is here.

New Trees in the Park!!! Since September 2021, Pope Hartford Designated Fund has planted 94 shade trees in the Park!

They include sycamores, oaks, honey locusts, Shagbark hickories, dawn redwoods, and autumn gold gingkoes. They are carefully sited to maintain scenic vistas across the park, provide much needed shade for visitors, and introduce a diverse palette of new trees, both large shade trees and understory trees, so as mature trees die other trees are already established to restore and maintain the canopy.

The PHDF was created in 2002 to support the revitalization of Hartford’s Pope Park through the planning and implementation of restoration, capital improvements, and recreational activities within or related to the park. In 2020 we completed a Master Tree Planting Plan, the first since the park was created in 1895. The total plan calls for planting 333 trees over 25 years throughout the park: 120 large shade trees; 74 small-medium shade trees; 83 ornamental trees; 56 evergreens.

We want to be sure the park’s tree canopy remains continuous throughout the next century while introducing a diversity of species to combat the threats from known diseases and pests and adapt to the warming climate.
